How to Find a Facial with Lasting Effects

I think of a facial like a teeth cleaning – what you do every day matters most, but they’re an important part of maintenance. My biggest problem with a lot of facials is that, well, they sometimes seem just like having someone else wash your face. You might walk out of the spa glowing, but the next day it’s back to normal.

Lately, I’ve been getting a monthly facial to test out which ones actually make a difference for your skin. While skin maintenance is totally an ongoing process (like, for the rest of your life), there are certain things you can look for to ensure the treatment has lasting effects on your beauty.

How to Find a Facial with Effects That Actually Last

Every great facial I’ve had includes an intense exfoliation option. The Time Lapse facial from George the Salon in Chicago includes two exfoliation methods: dermaplaning and a chemical peel! I haven’t found a facial quite like it before, so of course I made myself a guinea pig for you all.

Dermaplaning Benefits

Dermaplaning is basically just a fancy way of saying someone is going to shave your face. To be fair, it’s a bit more intensive than that. A solution is put on your face to prep your skin, and then the esthetician makes tiny strokes with a scalpel to remove dead skin and peach fuzz.

+ Makes makeup application smooth and easy

+ Removes any unwanted hair (I notice it on everyone now!)

+ Gives you a dewy, glowing look

+ Reduces the appearance of fine lines

+ Increases skincare product absorption

Getting it done at a spa is amazing, and definitely the most effective way to try dermaplaning. In between visits, you can also keep up with it at home with this totally affordable little tool.

Chemical Peel Benefits

A chemical peel involves applying an acidic solution to your face to remove layers of dead or damaged skin. If “chemical peel” brings to mind that episode of Sex and The City where Samantha has to wear a veil to cover her raw, scary face – don’t worry. Chemical peels you can get at a spa don’t go deep enough to give you that intense of a reaction. They do, however, have tons of positive benefits for your skin.

+  Improves acne scars and skin texture

+ Reduces the effects of sun damage

+ Corrects pigment problems

+ Improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

+ Increases collagen production (which makes you look younger! Praise)

The Time Lapse facial also includes skin analysis, light therapy, an anti-aging serum, and great technique from the pros at George the Salon. It was my first time trying dermaplaning, and Lindsey put me at ease. The process was painless and I loved the result! Finding a professional who makes you comfortable is so important.

I also always look at the product lines that spas carry. Some of my favorites are NeoCutis, Skinceuticals, and PCA. George the Salon uses PCA for peels and after care, and it is the stuff that makes my skin feel like a baby’s for weeks after a treatment. After an intense treatment, gentle products are key! You don’t want to ruin all that gorgeousness, right?

What do you look for in a facial? How intense do you like your skincare treatments?
