Winter has finally hit Chicago, and I’m in hardcore hibernation mode. Despite the snow on the ground, I’m getting excited for this year’s Cupid’s Undie Run!
This awesome event was a blast last year when I lived in Cincinnati, even with plenty of falling snow. Last year Cupid’s Undie Run raised over $3.5 Million to #EndNF – and plenty of party people took to the streets in underwear to celebrate. NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body, causing blindness, deafness, learning disabilities, and severe chronic pain for lots of kids (one in 3,000, to be exact). One thing that surprised me while fundraising last year was how many people I knew with NF! Why had I never heard of this condition before??? I can’t imagine what these kids go through at such a young age – hundreds of doctor visits, multiple tumors, MRIs, and no treatment options besides surgeries and/or brutal chemotherapy.
The Cupid’s party goes a bit like this: liquid courage -> 1 mile fun run -> more party. Stripping down to your skivvies is encouraged (because really, when else can you do this?), but people wear just about everything from costumes to normal cold-weather running gear.
This event is important enough – and fun enough – to get plenty of national attention. Check out this cover of Runner’s World!
